Weather and Climate
The best way to prepare for the climate and weather in central Provence is to pay heed to these general guidelines. The weather can be very much like Northern California, year round
SUMMER
Hot, to very hot in the Summer (Mid June, July, August, into early September). A light wrap or sweater is the most you will need in the evening in summer.
SPRING and FALL
These two times of year can only be described as nearly perfect, but it can, and does rain, so be prepared with a light raincoat. Read below if you are considering a "bridge season". PROBABLY the BEST time to visit Provence.
WINTER
Having just returned (Dec.8th, 2018) I can say it can get and cold, and wet, in the winter. BUT there are MAJOR BENEFITS: Empty tourist sites, and museums; pleasant people, who are happy to see you in their shops and restaurants. The general attitude, and warmth you feel in the off-season is REAL. Summer can be so packed with tourists that the proprietors of the shops and restaurants are burnt out. By November, they are looking for business. Take advantage of the shorter days, with virtually private visits to attractions, restaurants and wineries. I recently visited the Chateau Lourmarin, (in Lourmarin about 35 minutes from the house), upon checking in for the self guided tour I was informed that I was the only person in the entire Chateau, AND, the only American for 4 days!!
You can really feel the personal warmth exuded by the local people during the winter months.
APPROPRIATE ATTIRE
Almost all churches, Cathedrals and religious sites require pants, for men, and longer skirts (to the knee) for women. Tank-tops, for men or women are not allowed. As well as skimpy tops for women. Do not be surprised to have someone call you out for less-than-appropriate attire.
Some restaurants and clubs also have a dress code, so be prepared.
CLOTHES PACKING PLAN
Light in the summer (think the Napa Valley or Palm Springs).
A mix of clothes for the Spring and Fall, could be cool, but sometimes quite warm (much like the coastal areas of California).
Winter clothes are: warm, dry, and comfortable.
SHOES
Bring comfortable daily-worn shoes for day, and save the good ones for evening. Nothing ruins a vacation faster than blisters! If you buy new shoes for the trip, wear them for several weeks before departure.
